Relativistic Effects (Electromagnetic Waves)

This module focuses on how the properties of light, such as frequency and wavelength, are influenced by motion and gravity as predicted by special and general relativity. In this case, the changes in frequency and wavelength are caused by the change in the gravitational potential. This is important to take into account in such areas as GPS and other satellite-based technologies.

Another relativistic effect is the relativistic Doppler effect, which is the change in frequency, wavelength and amplitude of light, caused by the relative motion of the source and the observer. For the classical Doppler effect, see Doppler Effect (Waves).
