Acoustic Waves (Waves)

Acoustic waves are types of mechanical waves that propagate through fluids and solids by causing the particles of the medium to displace from their equilibrium positions. In fluids, they propagate in a longitudinal manner, causing particles to move along the direction of wave propagation. In solids, an additional transverse component is added due to the presence of shear moduli, see Stress (Elasticity).

Also see Acoustic Waves (Continuum Mechanics) for the laws regarding the speed of sound in media.
