Conservation Laws (Chemistry)¶
By definition, a closed system is one that does not exchange any matter with its surroundings and is not acted upon by external forces.
A basic law of physics and chemistry holds that the total mass of a closed system is conserved, i.e. it does not change with time.
Notes:
This is only true in the classical limit. In general relativity, mass is not a conserved quantity.
